These techniques may be considered after specialist evaluation for selected patients with disc prolapse, persistent sciatica, nerve compression or spinal instability requiring decompression and/or stabilization.

Principle

Endoscopic discectomy for disc prolapse is performed through small portals without exposing the whole spine. MIS spine surgery may also be used for selected single-level TLIF and posterior stabilization procedures in patients with sciatica or related spinal conditions.

Advantages

• Small incision, commonly around 2–4 inches for MIS procedures
• Less intraoperative blood loss
• Reduced surgical load and operative time in suitable cases
• Supports early post-operative mobilization, often within 24 hours when clinically appropriate
• Shorter hospitalization in suitable cases, with discharge possible after about 24 hours depending on the procedure and recovery
